Demand that Mrs. Bev Perdue stop the use of heartsticking as the way to euthanize dogs and cats at the Robeson County Animal Shelter/Control. You can see video online how hundreds of innocent dogs and cats are abused and killed on a weekly basic. This is barbacic yet she continues to not pass laws to end this sick abuse. Pet overpopulation is a big problem in Robeson County because they don't have strict laws on caring for your pet or spaying/neutering them so they end up being abused by the employess at local shelters. This needs to stop in 2010. Mrs. Perdue is obviously not an animal lover and should be ashamed of herself and her State.

We the undersigned plead & urge you to put an end to cruel animal euthanasia by gas chamber & heartstick methods.As we are all aware the shelter workers are in physical health danger from the carbon monoxide being used & possibilty of chamber explosion which has already happened.The mental stress on these workers is also an issue as they see & hear the agony of the animals.These animals are being treated as if criminals which don't even go through this.25-30 animals at a time are stuffed into the chamber,screaming,howling,crying out,choking,vomiting,fighting each other,urinating,deficating & banging their heads against the chamber wall.Many convulse go into comas & are buried alive or thrown in the garbage alive.These are living,breathing,feeling,innocent & speechless beings.Some have lost their homes,have known nothing but abuse & neglect.There is not one humane aspect in this.It is totally unacceptable.We as a nation should be setting an example in being humane.The places where it has been deemed appropriate to use gas on vicious dogs is also unacceptable as there are other ways to euthanize them and some shelters are not sticking to that one rule & are gasing other animals.These animals are also suffering going without food & water for hours before the chamber so they do not make as much of a mess.Heartstick method when the animal is not under full sedation is also cruel.The best way is through IV (via a vein).Please help us outlaw something that was a horrible & gruesome part of human history & should not exist anywhere in the U.S.We thank you for your time & understanding on this issue.

Jasper, AL - Marcus Campbell was relieved to find out his lost boxer, named Boost, had been found Tuesday. The dog was at the Humane Society in Walker County, and Campbell was there to claim him the next morning before the doors even opened.

"She asked what I needed, and I said, 'I'm here to pick up my dog that you got in at 4 o'clock.' She said, 'The only dog we got in at 4 o'clock was the boxer dog that an old couple brought in.' I said, 'Yes, ma'am. That's him,' and she said, 'Wedone put him to sleep.'"

Campbell was too late. Boost was gone. Humane Society Executive Director Lane Reno says the dog came in at 4 and was put down by 4:30. At first, she thought the dog was a pit bull or pit bull mix, and says in those 30 minutes, her staff quickly evaluated Boost's temperament
"We can have any individual bring a dog in. It's a family pet. It's never bitten anybody. It's really nice, but I guarantee you if it tries to bite one of us while we're reaching for it, we cannot and will not put that animal up for adoption."

She says the 55 cages were already full, leaving no room for the moody boxer as the business day came to a close. The lack of space has become quite the issue as more and more strays are dropped off.

But Campbell maintains his dog was well behaved and was not a stray.

"It had a collar, and it was well fed. She should have known it was somebody's dog."


Campbell has hired an attorney because he believes there's a chance the full bred Boost may have been sold. Reno denies that accusation. Meanwhile, the Humane Society's board plans to meet with Walker County leaders to discuss getting some type of animal control for the unincoporated areas of Walker County.


The goal of this petition is for reformation of the Walker County Humane Society. We would like to see the law followed by the Walker County Humane Society as well as by its employees.

We first made attempts to contact board members of the Walker County Humane Society to remedy this situation, but once we saw these members were choosing to only listen to Lane Reno's side of the story, we decided to go public with the truth about the Walker County Humane Society.

I had no idea what this was until reading below. Please help to end this cruel and inhumane method that some shelters use throughout the United States.

*Intracardial injections, commonly referred to as "heart sticks," are considered inhumane and cruel when performed on animals that aren't anesthetized or comatose. Using the "heart stick" method is painful because the needle containing sodium pentobarbital - a schedule II controlled substance used to euthanize animals - passes through the chest wall and several layers of muscle before puncturing the heart. If the euthanasia substance isn't carefully and accurately administered, an animal's lungs could be punctured, causing them to fill with fluid, a painful way to die.

Intracardial injections are difficult to administer effectively on fully conscious animals because in the animal, the lungs and the heart are constantly moving, said Dr. Bonnie Beaver, a veterinarian and professor of veterinary medicine who is considered a euthanasia expert by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
