Boost Euthanized for no reason - The Petition Site

Jasper, AL - Marcus Campbell was relieved to find out his lost boxer, named Boost, had been found Tuesday. The dog was at the Humane Society in Walker County, and Campbell was there to claim him the next morning before the doors even opened.

"She asked what I needed, and I said, 'I'm here to pick up my dog that you got in at 4 o'clock.' She said, 'The only dog we got in at 4 o'clock was the boxer dog that an old couple brought in.' I said, 'Yes, ma'am. That's him,' and she said, 'Wedone put him to sleep.'"

Campbell was too late. Boost was gone. Humane Society Executive Director Lane Reno says the dog came in at 4 and was put down by 4:30. At first, she thought the dog was a pit bull or pit bull mix, and says in those 30 minutes, her staff quickly evaluated Boost's temperament
"We can have any individual bring a dog in. It's a family pet. It's never bitten anybody. It's really nice, but I guarantee you if it tries to bite one of us while we're reaching for it, we cannot and will not put that animal up for adoption."

She says the 55 cages were already full, leaving no room for the moody boxer as the business day came to a close. The lack of space has become quite the issue as more and more strays are dropped off.

But Campbell maintains his dog was well behaved and was not a stray.

"It had a collar, and it was well fed. She should have known it was somebody's dog."

Campbell has hired an attorney because he believes there's a chance the full bred Boost may have been sold. Reno denies that accusation. Meanwhile, the Humane Society's board plans to meet with Walker County leaders to discuss getting some type of animal control for the unincoporated areas of Walker County.

The goal of this petition is for reformation of the Walker County Humane Society. We would like to see the law followed by the Walker County Humane Society as well as by its employees.

We first made attempts to contact board members of the Walker County Humane Society to remedy this situation, but once we saw these members were choosing to only listen to Lane Reno's side of the story, we decided to go public with the truth about the Walker County Humane Society.

Bolivia: First country in South America to ban circuses with animals

Friday 22 May 2009 0 comments

Animal Defenders International (ADI) is very happy because the bill prohibits the use of animals in circuses has been approved in both houses of Congress in Bolivia.
The bill introduced by Congresswoman Ximena Flores, was approved by the House of Representatives in January by the Commission on Sustainable Development of the Senate. On May 13, 2009, the project was approved by the House majority in the Senate with minor modifications. Yesterday, those amendments were approved unanimously by the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies. Now, the project will be forwarded to President Evo Morales Ayma, for signature and enactment into law.

Stop Donkey misery in Nepal

Stop Donkey misery in Nepal (Petition)
Working donkeys of Nepal are among the most neglected creatures in the country. They toll and slave in brick killns, as riksha wallahs, as porters.First hand observations show that the donkeys receive no medical care and suffer from malnutrition, open sores, lacerations, and general neglect. In the absence of any care sick donkeys are left to die by the roadside. The situation of donkeys in brick killns has been compared to a 'mediaeval hell hole' by a social worker.

Save the Lemur - The Petition Site

Tuesday 19 May 2009 0 comments

Save the Lemur - The Petition Site: "Since the mid 1980's, mining, logging, and deforestation toward economic development has devastated the habitat of Lemur, and other large and small endangered species of mammel indigenous and unique to Madagascar.
This petition is to plead with the Malagasy government to create or assign a committee for responsible growth and development before these endangered animals become extinct.
Status:
Out of the fifty different kinds of lemurs, ten of those types are critically endangered, seven are endangered, and nineteen are considered vulnerable.

Conservation & Ecology: Lemurs play an important role in the ecology of Madagascar and the Comores Islands, because they disperse seeds from the fruit they eat. These seeds can then grow into new plants, which is important because the forests of Madagascar are being destroyed at a very high rate. "

Nevada's Anti-Tethering Bill Goes to the Governor! | Animal Law Coalition

"Update May 16, 2009: By a vote of 32-8, the Nevada Assembly has passed S.B. 132, the landmark bill that will restrict the number of hours a dog can be chained to 14 per day and require that any tether be at least 12' long or if it is a pulley or trolley, allow the dog to move at least 12 feet in one direction.

The state senate has already passed the bill. It's on to the governor.

Please contact Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons and urge him to sign S.B. 132 into law to restrict the chaining of dogs. Tell the governor it is both cruel and dangerous to chain dogs for long periods. Nevada animal control support this bill. Dogs that are chained for long periods tend to be neglected and can be dangerous, straining animal control resources and endangering the community.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and United States Dept of Agriculture (USDA) also oppose chaining dogs for long periods. The Center for Disease Control has said chained dogs are 2.8 times more likely to bite adults. Chained dogs are nearly 5 times more likely to bite children.
S.B. 132 is a common sense bill that allows people to tether dogs while they are at work and then helps get dogs off chains for a period of time each day for much needed socialization and exercise. Tell the governor signing this bill, S.B. 132, is a matter of community safety and stopping animal cruelty"

Take action: Protect the whaling ban, protect whales!

Take action: Protect the whaling ban, protect whales!

On 22 June over 80 governments will meet to decide the future of the world’s whales. More than 25 years after the global ban on commercial whaling was passed, these intelligent mammals are in danger once more.
At the International Whaling Commission’s (IWC) annual meeting in Portugal, member countries will consider a proposal to allow coastal whaling – effectively lifting the international ban and spelling disaster for whales.
Many governments – maybe even your government – seem dangerously interested in accepting the proposal; they believe it could act as leverage to control Japan’s so-called ‘scientific’ whaling.
A dangerous compromise
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Bartering with coastal whaling quotas will not guarantee that fewer whales are killed by Japan, Norway and Iceland, all of whom defy the ban.
Instead, this proposal would open the floodgates for this cruel industry to grow worldwide.
Whaling subjects gentle, warm-blooded mammals to rifle fire and exploding harpoons, and ultimately an agonising death. Many hundreds will suffer from horrific explosion wounds for up to an hour before finally dying.
If we act now we can prevent this >>
Ensure the IWC votes for whales, not whaling
The world’s whales urgently need you to tell your national representative at the International Whaling Commission to uphold the blanket ban on commercial whaling.
If your nation is not represented at the IWC, you can still take action: write to the foreign ministers of Iceland, Japan or Norway, asking them to cease commercial and ‘scientific’ whaling on welfare grounds.
Please protect whales today. You can choose to take the action in Dutch, English, German, Portuguese or Spanish >>

Help Racing Greyhounds- PETITION

Sunday 17 May 2009 0 comments

Ask your Governor to introduce legislation banning greyhound racing

Goal: 20,000 • Progress: 9,420

Sponsored by: The Animal Rescue Site

Greyhounds are loving creatures and great pets, but unfortunately, they are regarded as mere money-making machines in the racing world. Thousands of these animals face a lifetime of cruelty. Many are mistreated every year in order to be profitable at the racetracks, and then simply "discarded" after they can no longer race.
Ask your Governor to introduce legislation banning greyhound racing. Sign the petition and tell a friend.

Eight states in the U.S. have banned greyhound racing, but active racetracks exist in fourteen states, and legislation is still needed in others to ensure that the practice does not spread.
Greyhounds face a high probability of injury during their careers at the racetrack. Some are then bred to produce litter after litter, their owners hoping for a few fast dogs amid many that are deemed undesirable. Far too often, these noble creatures then face abandonment or death when they are considered unsuitable for racing due to age or other factors.
Help stop the inhumane treatment of these gentle dogs. Ask your Governor to introduce legislation banning greyhound racing.

Don't Let Lucy's death be in vain! - The Petition Site

Don't Let Lucy's death be in vain! - The Petition Site: "Lucy, a two year old Shar-pei mix was being fostered by ARK for another animal shelter, Safe Haven, Cameron, MO. Lucy escaped the enclosed area through a hole in the fence. For over 1.5 hours I tried to recapture Lucy, but I was not able to before I had to leave for an appointment. When I returned home I found Lucy lying at the inside back door of my house on my back porch where Lucy had returned after being shot. Lucy bled out at my back door.
A witness who saw where Lucy came running from after the shot was heard, was very reluctant to come forward for fear of their own dog's safety and their own safety. Lucy should not have suffered this horrific death. Nothing was done. Police were called, but due to no actual "witness" they could not do anything. The St. Joseph Channel 2 news team was out and filmed the area, the St. Joseph News Press did a story, The Albany Ledger did a story. Why does this type of killing go unpunished? Why are not the laws of cities enforced? Because no one wants to stand up for the innocent animals that are killed daily by some "brute" who has no qualms about killing other peoples' pets. The individual suspected for this shooting has actually pulled a gun on me. Nothing is ever done. This continues in this area and something needs to be done. These individuals should not be allowed to take the law into their own hands. Isn't that why we have law inforcement we pay to protect us? Please sign this petition so Lucy did not die in vain."

Live Cats Used in Cruel Training Courses at Texas Tech | PETA.org

Live Cats Used in Cruel Training Courses at Texas Tech PETA.org

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) has been buying live cats from Odessa, Texas, Animal Control for use in cruel medical training courses. PETA has filed a complaint with the university urging officials to replace the use of cats in this training with educationally superior medical simulation tools.
The cats are forced to undergo painful intubation procedures in which hard plastic tubes are repeatedly forced down their wind pipes by course participants. This can result in bleeding, swelling, scarring of the animals' throat tissue, collapsed lungs, and even death. In another procedure, the cats have air forced into their chest cavities so that course participants can repeatedly practice inserting a needle into the animals to remove the excess air.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, which sponsor the most widely taught pediatric life-support courses in the country, exclusively endorse the use of modern, human-like manikins, not live animals, for this kind of training. Join PETA in calling on Texas Tech to stop these cruel and outdated training procedures on cats.

Please contact TTUHSC's vice president of medical affairs, Dr. Steven L. Berk, and urge him to stop these cruel training procedures on cats.

Stop Long Distance Transport of Sheep for Slaughter Petition

Stop Long Distance Transport of Sheep for Slaughter Petition

To: Minister Sotirios Xatzigakis
I am writing to express my concern and opposition regarding the government’s plan to resume the export of live sheep to Arabian countries. Transporting animals long distances for slaughter falls well short of providing the level of animal protection now demanded by most developed countries. Despite efforts in recent years to improve the welfare of farmed animals transported for slaughter over long distances, many thousands of animals continue to suffer and die every year on long sea and road journeys, and I believe it is impossible to make these grueling trips humane. I urge you protect the animal welfare laws by refusing to resume live sheep exports , to stand firm against the cruelty of live export and maintain the country’s reputation.
Sincerely,

Killed the day he was going to be adopted!
Hi. My name is, or was, BeetleJuice. I was given this name when I arrived at the shelter. My picture above was not my best hair day. They caught me before I could brush up and the hair fairy had visited the night before. This is the story of how and why I died on April 29th, 2009 while in the care of the Humane Society of Montgomery County, Texas.
Before I tell you about my last day alive, let me take you back a few months when I found myself in the animal shelter in Conroe, Texas for the first time. When I first got here, it took me a few days to adjust to the conditions. I got fed everyday and was treated pretty good by the staff. I stayed in my cage most of the time.

Send Lucy to the Tennesse Elephant sanctuary - The Petition Site

Send Lucy to the Tennesse Elephant sanctuary - The Petition Site

take action! the free lucy campaign!you can help give her a new life
Please support the Zoocheck Canada/Voice for Animals campaign to relocate Lucy, the sole remaining elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, to the Elephant Sanctuary, a world renowned 2,700 acre natural habitat elephant facility, in Tennessee.
With the transfer of Samantha, a female African elephant, to the North Carolina Zoo in 2007, Lucy has been alone. She is overweight, suffering from chronic arthritis and foot problems, lethargic and displays prolonged periods of abnormal stereotypic behaviours, such as rocking and swaying.
Elephants, particularly females, are highly social animals that live in matriarchal family groups for most, if not all, of their lives. They should never be kept alone.
With the 2008 transfer of Maggie, a female elephant at the Alaska Zoo, to a sanctuary in California, Lucy is now the most northerly and socially isolated elephant on the continent.
The Valley Zoo has stated that it has no plans to move Lucy, that she is not a social elephant and that she is fine where she is. Not only are these statements contrary to everything that is known about the biology and behaviour of elephants, it also is contrary to Alberta's own zoo regulations which require that animals be kept in appropriate social environments.
The Valley Zoo also claims a mal-positioned molar in association with another medical condition make it dangerous to move Lucy, but they ignore the fact that elephants, many with serious health issues, are routinely moved from facility to facility and have been for more than 150 years.
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is municipally-owned and operated, so the City of Edmonton has the authority to determine how the zoo operates and what decisions are made.
Please write to the City of Edmonton Mayor and Members of Council, to let them know that you want Lucy moved to The Elephant Sanctuary as soon as possible. Tell them that Lucy should not be kept alone; that Edmonton is too cold for elephants; that the zoo's elephant exhibit is too small; and that keeping Lucy is in contravention of Alberta's zoo regulations.
Please add your signature to the petition which will be sent to Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel.

Justice for Karley! Convict Glynn Johnson...maximum prison time, 4 yrs. - The Petition Site

Convict Glynn Johnson...maximum prison time, 4 yrs. - The Petition Site: "Our last petition was written in Nov 2008. That petition was used to get Glynn Johnson arrested & charged with FELONY ANIMAL CRUELTY.

This petition is being written to get Glynn Johnson CONVICTED of Felony Animal Cruelty & to receive the MAXIMUM prison term, which is 4 yrs."

On May 1st., Glynn Johnson was "HELD TO ANSWER" for the beating death of KARLEY, a 6 month old German Shepard. The Judge felt there was sufficient evidence to name Johnson the primary suspect in the death of Karley. On May 15th, there will be an arraingment of Johnson. For those of you that might not know the story of KARLEY, let me tell you a little about her. Nov 3rd., 2008, Karley was beaten with a 12lb rock, her jaw was broken, she had swelling in her head & her skull had been crushed. All of this was done by Glynn Johnson, who at the time, was employed as an LA COUNTY ASST. FIRE CHIEF. On Nov. 3rd., Karley got out of her yard & was being returned to her home by a neighbor when Johnson stepped in & said that he would return Karley to her home. Instead of returning her, he started beating her with the rock. Johnson CLAIMED that Karley, for an unknown reason, ATTACKED him & started biting him. He claims he FEARED FOR HIS LIFE. The original neighbor witnessed what was taking place & tried to stop Johnson's attack. Karley's injuries were so intense that she had to be put down. If anyone would like to read the entire story of Karley, please go to: justice4karley.comWe hope that you will join us in signing this petition & hopefully you will pass it along to your family & friends. Glynn Johnson HAS to be held accountable for what he did. This wasn't a case of a vicious dog attacking an innocent person. Johnson ADMITTED that Karley had rolled over onto her BACK. Everyone knows that that's a sign of SUBMISSION. With this petition, we are asking that Johnson not only be CONVICTED of the felony but that he also receive the maximum prison sentence which is 4 yrs. We ALL must stick together to STOP any & all animal abuse as well as human abuse. Laws are in place for a reason. We HAVE to step in & put a stop to all abuse when we witness it. All you have to do is make a phone call. You don't have to step in & try to physically stop it BUT you do have to take the first step which is picking up your phone. We HAVE to be the voice for those that have no voice. We have to be the voice behind that small child or that panicked & threatened spouse. We have to be the voice for those defenseless animals. Please join us in this attempt to make changes.Thank you.

Punish Puppy Torturer  - The Petition Site

Anthony Spidle severely beat and tortured his ex girlfriend’s 6 month old pit bull mix puppy named Gabriella. She was beaten with a skateboard and tennis racket and thrown against the wall. He recorded the puppy yelping and crying on his ex girlfriend’s voice mail saying, “she doesn’t love me and she doesn’t love you.” He then jumped on the puppy's head and throat, "yelling that he was going to kill him, cut off his head" and give it to his ex-girlfriend. The puppy barely survived. Judge Barrett also presided in Henry’s case. Of the maximum penalty of 1 year, he sentenced Marc Vincent to 6 months of which he served only four. In court, Judge Barrett told Marc Vincent “Your conduct was just horrendous." He also said, "I don't like people who abuse animals and I don't like people who abuse children. Animals and children are vulnerable." It is our hope that Judge Barrett will represent the community that demanded stiffer penalties for animal torturers and send the message that this “horrendous” behavior will no longer be tolerated. We are asking the public to write the Honorable Judge William W. Barrett and respectfully ask him to punish Anthony Spidle to the fullest extent of the law.
Anthony Spidel is the first adult in Utah to be charged with a felony under the new animal torture law.

STOP packaging and promoting cruelty! - The Petition Site
I am planning to write to Tivoli hotels & resorts to complain about their 'Wild Boar Hunting' packages in Portugal. Wils Boar can be hunted with guns, dogs and bow& arrow.

Not only is hunting obviously immoral and unethical..... It has zero to do with population control (as zoologists, vets and scientists have proven time and time again) and more to do with the human ego and cruelty. Legal, neatly laid-on and packaged cruelty. Making the entire issue of hunting seem a normal, natural, happy, sporting affair to be enjoyed as a leisure pursuit on holiday, as opposed to the unjustifiable slaughter it really is.

Please see the link below for yourself:

http://www.tivolihotels.com/hotels-portugal/on-line-reservations/packages/tivoli_marina_vilamoura/pack-wild-boar-hunt-tivoli-marina-vilamoura/promotion.aspx

My aim is to get as many names together as possible, to show we, the general public, will be boycotting Tivoli Hotels & Resorts untill they stop promoting and earning from such outdated, blood thirsty practices.

I will also be writing to www.huntinginturkey.eu, who organise and promote hunting as holidays. wild Boar, Deer, Lynx and Birds among other Animals too.

Hunting is as viscious as it is neanderthal.... All forms of hunting MUST be stopped, but I am focusing on this particular form and promotion of it right now.

ALSO please write to the hotels yourself at: htmarinavilamoura@tivolihotels.com

Wild Boar are timid harmless creatures, who only become agrressive when their young are threatened.

PLEASE repost! Thank You!

Save Critical Habitat for the Florida Panther - The Petition Site

Target: Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar
Sponsored by: Sierra Club

No protected habitat exists for the Florida panther, the only big cat east of the Mississippi. And fewer than 100 individual panthers remain, making the Florida Panther one of America's most endangered species.

Scientists conclude that the panther's existing habitat is the bare minimum needed for the remaining population to survive. Five panthers have already been killed on south Florida highways this year, with an additional 24 panthers killed by vehicles in the preceding two years. This situation must not continue.

The Interior Department has the ability under the Endangered Species Act to protect the remaining habitat now. Urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to designate critical habitat for the Florida panther today!

Stop Cats From Being Gassed to Death at Coastal Animal Services, North Cowichan, BC

Stop Cats From Being Gassed to Death at Coastal Animal Services, North Cowichan, BC

Coastal Animal Services Ltd has provided animal control services and pound facilities for North Cowichan since 1975. It is time they stopped using the notorious and archaic gas box to destroy unwanted cats, young and old as well as feral cats and kittens. For years, animal control agencies and shelters have destroyed unwanted cats by asphyxiating them to death with carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide gas in the gas box. Thankfully, many animal control operators have now changed their euthanasia protocol by taking unwanted cats to veterinary clinics for lethal injection, or by having animal shelter technicians perform the injection, which is much faster and far more humane. Warning - graphic description: I have seen what cats look like after being killed by gassing, it is a gruesome sight. Cats and kittens are loaded into wire cages, which are then placed inside the gas box. The lid is shut and the gas is turned on. Kittens, climb to the top of the inside of the wire cage and are found dead with their paws sticking up through the top of the cage, their jaws tightly clamped down on the wire. I have seen litters of kittens in with the mother cats. They died with their eyes wide open while trying frantically to escape. The mother cats were slumped over, listening to their kittens dying cries as they themselves were suffocated. The person responsible for removing their bodies would have to pry their jaws open to get them off the wire. Cats being gassed do not just fall peacefully asleep, as some pound operators who continue to use gas will tell you. Veterinarians provide a faster and less stressful means of euthanasia for unwanted felines whose lives must end all too soon. Unadoptable dogs from Coastal Animal Services are taken to a veterinary clinic and euthanized there. Why not the cats as well?*Update: Sue Hughes, owner of Coastal Animal Services, spoke to CHEK 6 News on April 29th, and said the cats are killed by compressed CO2. The Humane Society of the United States says the use of CO2 is inhumane. From their website: Carbon Dioxide (CO2)—CO2 is not acceptable for use in animal care and control facilities for the euthanasia of dogs and cats. CO2 produced from dry ice or generated from any other method is unacceptable.

NC House Ag Committee Passes Pro-Gas Chamber Bill | Animal Law Coalition

Thursday 7 May 2009 0 comments
NC House Ag Committee Passes Pro-Gas Chamber Bill Animal Law Coalition

Update May 7: The North Carolina House Agriculture Committee has voted to pass HB 27.
The original bill was re-written, and the final language was withheld from the public until after the vote. Go here for a copy.
The secrecy was probably to limit protests. This bill now sanctions the use of CO gas for killing all shelter animals. In fact, use of CO gas chambers is now one of 2 methods that must be used in killing shelter animals. CO gas chambers would be elevated by HB 27 as not only an acceptable means of killing shelter animals but one sanctioned and even preferred by the state. This bill will mean it is less likely that North Carolina shelters will stop using gas chambers.
The other method of euthanasia allowed is intravenous or intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbital or an equivalent drug.
HB 27 does not indicate one method is preferred over the other, meaning the state would sanction both equally. Even the AVMA and NCVMA recognize lethal injection is the humane, preferred alternative.
It is not clear why proponents bothered to pass the bill other than to ensure the continued availability of CO gas chambers. The bill does nothing for animals and makes no changes regarding other methods of killing that are not already addressed by the state Dept. of Agriculture rules regarding euthanasia.
Under HB 27 a veterinarian, certified euthanasia technician or a probationary CET working under the supervision of a veterinarian, has complete discretion to choose the method of killing: CO gas chambers or lethal injection. A log must be kept of the method of killing used for each animal, the identity of the person performing the killing and the reason for the particular method.
This move to entrench the use of CO gas chambers by public shelters should probably come as no surprise. Ralph Houser, DVM, manufactures gas chambers and also sells them to North Carolina shelters and instructs them on their use. He sits on the North Carolina Animal Rabies Control Association. For more on Houser, go here. Houser together with North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, Farm Bureau, North Carolina Association of County Commissioners and the state Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services, worked on HB 27 to assure the continuation of CO gas chambers in North Carolina's animal shelters.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
There is an anti-gas chamber bill, Davie's Law, that has been introduced in the Senate by Sen. Hoyle as SB 199. The bill is stalled, however, and it is important that you contact Sen. Hoyle and urge him to keep his campaign promise and pass the bill he has introduced, S.B. 199, Davie's Law. Go here for more. Act now because the bill must pass the Senate before the May 14 crossover date!
Also, HB 27 now goes to the Judiciary II Committee. There will be a vote on this bill shortly before the May 14 crossover date so act now! PLEASE write and call the members of the and ask them to OPPOSE House Bill 27.

Salvemos a los Animales de Coiba en Panama - The Petition Site

Automatic translation

Coiba National Park, located on the Pacific coast of the province of Veraguas, Republic of Panama, is considered World Heritage by UNESCO in July 2005 for its extensive marine ecosystem, and coastal islands. Earlier this nature reserve was a penal colony until the July 26, 2004, Law No.44, became the Coiba National Park.

At that time a group of cattle that were meant for the consumption of the defendants, was negligently forgotten in a place and have been reproduced by nature to become 2029 in total. Unfortunately, for lack of attention to grass, since there are no more people to keep the wild cattle must be moved to forested areas in search of food to survive and have innocently negatively impacting the area and therefore may affect the reefs coral.

The Ministry of Agricultural Development of Panama (MIDA) has commented that the solution to this problem is the slaughter of cattle. We protectors of animals and nature, we raise our voice for the MIDA and the competent authorities of the Republic of Panama to find alternative solutions free of cruelty and injustice of this situation, which could be avoided if proper organization was applied at the right time. Make a request to seek humanitarian solutions for these living beings who only follow their instinct of survival which were exposed by human negligence. It is unacceptable for a location to preserve and protect nature and wildlife, is the scene of such a contradiction.

Seal Hunt 2009 - Political Actions for and Against the Slaughter

EU approves ban on seal imports
May 05, 2009 07:49 AMConstant BrandTHE ASSOCIATED PRESS
STRASBOURG, France–The European Parliament approved plans to slap a European Union import ban on seal products Tuesday, a move meant to force an end to Canada's annual seal hunt, which is the world's largest.
The EU assembly overwhelmingly endorsed a bill which said commercial seal hunting, notably in Canada, is "inherently inhumane."
The bill still needs the backing of EU governments, which officials said is only a formality since national envoys had already endorsed the bill prior to Tuesday's vote.
The bill is expected to become law in a matter of weeks ensuring it is in place before next year's seal hunt.
Animal welfare activists rejoiced, saying the vote was a significant step toward ending the Canadian seal hunt.
"We're absolutely thrilled," said Rebecca Aldworth, a spokeswoman for the Canadian branch of the Humane Society International who attended the vote in Strasbourg.
"This is a historic moment in the campaign to stop commercial seal hunts around the world, particularly in Canada. This is a really tremendous victory for everyone all over the world who's been calling for this for decades".
EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas also welcomed the vote and said it addressed "EU citizen's concerns with regard to the cruel hunting methods of seals."
Tuesday's vote however, is sure to pose problems in EU-Canada ties and comes on the eve of a key summit between the two countries in Prague where they are supposed to launch negotiations on a wide-ranging free-trade pact.
Canada and Norway, had already warned the EU they would take the 27-country bloc to the World Trade Organization if it moved to ban seal product imports.
The ban will apply to all products and processed goods derived from seals including their skins which are used to make fur coats, meat, oil blubber, organs and even omega 3 pills which are made from seal oil.
The new EU rule, however, will offer narrow exemptions to Inuit communities from Canada and Greenland and elsewhere to continue their traditional hunts but bars them from a large-scale trading of their pelts, and other seal goods in Europe. Another exemption will allow for non-commercial and "small-scale" hunts to manage seal populations, however seal products derived from those hunts will not be allowed to enter the EU.
Inuit groups say such restrictions will spell disaster for their communities which rely heavily on seal hunts for their livelihoods.
Joshua Kango, who heads the Nunavut-based Amarok hunters and trappers association said the ban "is definitely going to impact the lives of the Inuit in the very near future." "We don't have any other way to survive economically," he told The Associated Press.
Arlene McCarthy, who chairs the European Parliament's internal market and consumer protection committee said Canada and others could not ignore the fact that a majority of Europeans are against the hunt and wanted it banned.
She added that concern took precedence over the concerns of sealers, fishermen and Inuit groups that carry out commercial hunts.
"While we of course have sympathy for those particular groups of people, the reality is that we sit here in the European Parliament and that millions of our citizens would like us to do the right thing and ban the cruel trade. They do not want to buy these products," she said.
The legislators faced heavy lobbying in recent months from both animal rights groups and authorities from Canada and Greenland. Curbing the hunt of seals in Canada has been the focus of the bill because of the size of its annual cull and the way seals are killed.
Canada's East Coast seal hunt is the largest of its kind in the world, with an average annual kill of about 300,000 harp seals. It exported around $5.5 million worth of seal products such as pelts, meat, and oils to the EU in 2006.
Animal rights groups believe the hunt is cruel, poorly monitored and provides little economic benefit once costs associated with policing and supporting the hunt are factored in. However, sealers and Canadian authorities say it is sustainable, humane and provides income for isolated fishing communities.
Seals are also hunted in Norway, Namibia, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

Justice for Tengteng ( month -old stray kitten) - The Petition Site

Monday 4 May 2009 0 comments

There are over half a million stray animals in the Philippines, and this is the story of just one of them. Tengteng was a month-old stray kitten who lived precariously on the grounds of the University of the Philippines at Diliman. Those who knew her spoke of a kitten who benefited from random acts of kindness including handouts of food, water, even a new collar to make herself look pretty. She enjoyed fleeting but happy moments with students who gave her a scratch or two, a tummy rub, and pats on her head. The only known photographs of Tengten are the ones you see on this site. One can say that Tengteng was not as hard up as other strays in the Philippines, but she was without a regular source of food, a home and a family to protect her.
Tengteng, like all animals, was God's child. But her life came to an abrupt end when on April 13th a second year physics student named Joseph Carlo Candare took her life and bragged about it on the web. On his blog entry for that day, Mr. Candare mockingly called Tengteng's death " an accidental Crime." However, by other accounts, Tengteng's killing was a deliberate and blood-thirsty attack fueled by Mr. Candare's visceral and sadistic hatred of cats.
How much hate, you might ask? Mr. Candare was described as taking a running start, leaping into the air, and then landing on Tengteng with the full force of his weight and momentum. Tengteng, who could not have weighed more than two pounds, was crushed under the grown man's weight. This was a conscious act, and Mr. Candare had ample opportunities to change his mind. Whatever life was left in Tengteng's body, the last few ounces of strength she had, enabled her to seek shelter in a hovel where she ultimately died moments later, alone. The imagery is horrifying, but we have been spared the deathly sounds that must have been blood-curdling. The agonizing scream of a kitten, the crushing of her bones, the taunting of the victor over the vanquished, it was a triumphant moment for one but unnecessarily tragic for another. Why should we care? Some have argued that we care too much about a kitten who did not belong to anyone. Some said tha there are many strays; why care about this one? All animals deserve respect. When we disrespect an animal, that says more about us than the animal. It is not how many animals are abused, but it is the knowledge that a most heinous crime was committed on a defenseless and sentient being that behooves us to act. Such acts, however singular, offends our sense of decency and righteousness. If there is one abused animal, then that is one too many. When we are confronted by cruelty, we must address it. Acts of abject cruelty towards animals, like Tengteng's killing, are simply unacceptable. It is up to the enlightened and the compassionate to stand up and speak in behalf of those on the receiving end of humankind's brute force.
Why take my word for it?You do not have to. I am reproducing Mr. Candare's blog entry for your perusal. Here, you can read his own words, his self-confession as a serial killer of cats, his disingenuous pang of conscience, and his not-so-veiled threat to kill more in a month ( English translation in brackets) :
"An Accidental Crime. First day sa supercon. Lunch time came. On our way out of old NIP I saw the cat I almost killed last Tuesday. Now everyone knows I hate cats. It's an unexplainable feeling towards them. Like some internal hatred. Hindi ko talaga alam kung bakit pero anumang pagpipigil sa sarili ay hindi sapat upang mapangibabawan ang panggigil ko sa mga pusa. [ I don't really know why my self-control is not enough to overcome my hatred of cats ] I pulled it on its tail and threw it. Then like some pro wrestler I jumped on it and my feet landed on it's torso. Slam! Felt good! But the cat didn't die, well not yet. It ran for its life and just as I was about to catch up on it somebody yelled: " Pwede bang pabayaan mo yung pusa?!" [ Can you leave the cat alone? ]. It was instant and involuntary. I stopped on my tracks. Nobody ever stopped me when assaulting cats. Well I guess there's always a first time for everything. The cat got away. Or at least that's what i thought. So we went to lunch Mel, Jayson, Tracy and me. After lunch, balik na sa kung anumang naiwang gawain [ we went back to whatever unfinished work we had ]. Then Tracy and Mel told me " Hui Jc napatay mo yung pusa" [ Hey, JC, you killed that cat ]. Hours later, habang abala sa XRD [ while busy at XRD ], a guy came in. Tanong niya: " Sinong pumatay dun sa pusa?" [ He asked, who killed that cat? ] Bang! Dat was me boi. Guilty as charged. I didn't see it die pero sabi ni Myles [ but Myles said ] it coughed up blood or at least something like that daw. Didn't realize I gave it a fatal hit. This isn't the first time I've killed a cat but this time it's different. It didn't occur to me back then that the cat had a leash. So I think somebody owns it. Well it's very well loved in NIP from what I heard and I just ended it's life. So there you go I'm sorry. And I wont be striking another one for maybe about a month. It feels good when your beating it(a cat) up but you suddenly feel something strange when it turns off permanently. That's how I feel right now. And maybe for the next days. Dang, am I a cat serial killer? "To Whom Should We Appeal? We are appealing to the high officials of the University of the Philippines at Diliman (U.P.) namely Dr. Sergio Cao, Chancellor of UP, Dr. Arnel Salvador, Director of the National Institute of Physics at UP, and to Dr. Caesar Saloma, Dean of the College of Science UP. These gentlemen, in their respective capacities, have the authority to set things right at the university. They can condemn, reject, and punish those who practice animal cruelty within the ranks of the university. They are gatekeepers to the long and illustrious history of the university. The conduct and safety of the student body are under their purview. We, therefore, are calling upon these gentlemen to apply the only just and appropriate punishment for Mr. Candare which is immediate expulsion from the university and to assist in seeking proper medical attention for Mr. Candare. I am asking for one thousand signatures. If you agree with the spirit of this petition, please sign it and offer your opinion for the benefit of these learned gentlemen. I will post updates when new developments occur. I thank you for helping engender a more compassionate Filipino society.Addenda: There were questions about criminal charges. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is in the process of gathering affidavits from eye-witnesses. Yes, Mr. Candare violated the provisions of the Philippine Animal Welfare Act, Republic Act 8485. PAWS' volunteer lawyer will be mapping our their legal case against Mr. Candare.
05/02/09 I had Mr. Candare's name as John C. Candare in the initial post because he presented himself as such on another blog, but someone corrected me. His real name is Joseph Carlo Candare.
05/02/09 You may express your outrage but please no personal threats against Mr. Candare. I have to submit this petition to UP officials, and I want it fair and clean. Substantive comments will greatly help the impact of this petition. Thanks.
05/04/09 Here's a link to a blog that has a screen shot of Mr. Candare's original website which has been taken down since the uproar began:

Swine Flu Slaughter - The Petition Site: "This slaughter has been ordered even though no reported cases of the disease has occered in Egypt. However, this is not the first time Hosni Mubarak has order the slaughter of supposedly diseased animals in the country. Mubarak also ordered the slaughter of many farm birds during the bird flu. This un-necessary slaughtering must stop! Sadly, the slaughter of these innocent pigs has already gone ahead, but I urge you to sign this petition to stop the future slaughter of farm animals and job loss for those who care for them. Please, have a heart. Help those without a voice."

ZOO - TRAFFIC OF WILD ANIMALS, RESCUED IN A BRAZILIAN ZOO

Some week ago, OIPA received a report about a traffic of wild animals in the Goiânia zoo, capital of the State of Goiás, Brazil. Goiânia seems the center of abuse on animals: this is the second time that OIPA informs the world about the cruelty on animals in this Brazilian city. This report arrived us by Maria de Lourdes França Rabelo, President of the association in defense of environment “Biodefesa” (www.biodefesa.org.br).Maria de Lourdes was the Director of Environment Education for the zoo, she was exempt because she was going to fight the traffic of wild animals. The president of the ONG Biodefesa, said that since some years the animals die or disappear. In a message sent to OIPA, she states: “In a week, I have seen traffic of animals in the light of the day: into a trunk or crammed over a lorry. I was able to verify that there was not a regular permission from Ibama (Brazilian Environmental Institute for Natural Resources). During the night the traffic is intensified, there were 150 parrots into a big enclosure that disappeared during a night. There were more than 4.000 animals into the zoo, today there are about 200. I were able to take some pictures about ill-treatments, I have got a cd with evidences of a traffic of toucans and snakes. I have documentation about the death of more tha 17 cobras in only one day. The worse thing was to discover that during one day 42 animals died”.

The latest event that shocked people in Goiânia was the mysterious death of a ippopotamo in the zoo, it comed after the mysterious death of a pantera, and the disappearance of 4 chimpanzees. The Director of the zoo, Rafael Cupertino, doesn’t give explanations about the facts and the President of “Biodefesa” thinks that animals are died after being sold such as stuff for collectors and she suspects that the bodies are used for the traffic of drugs. In the letter she said that she did all the reports to the Brazilian Public authorities , (Prefecture of Goiânia, Public Department, Ibama Institute and Federal Police) but they were not interested into the matter .Maria de Lourdes charges mainly, an Official of the Public Department that has the evidences but refuses to take measures. This Official was not interested in animals. In a second moment the Official said to a local paper “Diário da Manhã” that she never saw abuses into the zoo. The photos show, without doubt, the abuses that are perpetrated on the animals. Please, send a mail to the Brazilian authorities and ask them to investigate on the reports done about the traffic of wild animals in Goiânia zoo and ask them to investigate about the death of animals; people who abuse animals have to be prosecuted.

Stronger Laws to Enforce Humane Factory Farming - The Petition Site: "The Humane Slaughter Act only covers cows and pigs it does not protect any poultry. All animals and poultry suffer and feel pain. Even with the Humane Slaughter Act in place animals and poultry are still frequently mistreated by workers at the farms, on the way to slaughter and at the slaughter houses. 14,500 Unnecessary Deaths by AHS in Minnesota - The Petition Site

14,500 Unnecessary Deaths by AHS in Minnesota - The Petition Site

Over 36,000 animals were taken into the Animal Humane Society of Minnesota and nearly half of them were destroyed. The AHS of Minnesota is a non-profit 501(c)3 and is now a collaborative of 5 agencies throughout the Twin Cities. A budget of an astonishing $11 million was collected by AHS from a number of sources none of which include government funding in 2007. They have also ventured into "for profit" business in the past year to raise even more money. The AHS needs to be restructured immediately and we are calling for the resignation of the CEO, Janelle Dixon and COO, Ray Aboyan. Under the direction of Janelle Dixon and Ray Aboyan, AHS destroyed over 14,500 animals for various reasons. Please sign this petition to save animals from the Animal Humane Society of Minnesota and it's current administration.

According to Janelle Dixon, CEO of AHS, the explanation of the more than 14,500 "humane deaths" by AHS included:
19% were owner requested
30% health of the animal
42% behavior/temperament (including animals that were just shy)
5% lack of space in the AHS for cats and other small animals
4% un-weaned babies with low survival rate.

Some simple math paints a troubling picture. If we remove from the total the 19% "owner requested" we are left with around 11,700 animals. We know from other publications that around 94% of the euthanized animals are dogs and cats. This means that around 11,200 cats and dogs were killed under the discretion of AHS reasons ranging from "un-weaned babies" (labor intensive), "health of the animal" (often very treatable illness), "behavior/temperament of the animal" (using very suspect criteria streamlined to pass only the most easily adoptable animals), and "lack of space in the AHS" (obviously relieved by working with rescues).

All of these numbers could be dramatically lowered or eliminated. Rescues and other groups throughout Minnesota could help these numbers decrease and save these special lives. AHS will not encourage this collaboration as they made over $2 million in revenue through their own adoptions and simply destroyed the other animals instead of making them available to rescues.

The AHS of Minnesota has one of the highest kill rates of non-profit kill shelters in the US and still manages to try and defend their actions by saying they had to do it. The 5 Animal Humane Society branches in the Twin Cities run by CEO, Janelle Dixon, according to their own numbers, euthanized an average of over 30 animals every day for a year. There are rescues who are willing to take most, if not all, of the animals. They only sent 43 animals to rescues over an 8 month period last year and still claim to work with dozens of rescues. In 2007 AHS made over $11 million. They paid 157 full-time, 98 part-time employees, almost $6 million (more than half of what they made). They also had 1,550 volunteers that put in over 100,000 hours of volunteer time - and they still did NOT save the animals.

The AHS of Minnesota under current management is destroying far more animals than it should. The Board of Directors should be ashamed of this catastrophe. The animals deserve better and people that care need to help them. Please sign this petition asking for the resignation of the AHS CEO - Janelle Dixon and COO - Ray Aboyan. An immediate restructuring of the Animal Humane Society in Minnesota needs to take place if there is any hope of stopping their killing of vulnerable companion animals.
To speak directly to Janelle Dixon of AHS call her at 763-522-4325.
